- Can you share with us how you first discovered that you were a highly sensitive person (HSP)? How has this understanding shaped your approach to business and leadership?
I learned I was a highly sensitive person (HSP) through a dark night of the soul. I had been self-employed for about 6 years and hustled to bring my business across the million-dollar mark for the first time, but I had nothing to show. I was exhausted and overwhelmed; it was my lowest net year. I began to spiral into a dark place of self-questioning, depression, and doubt. I wasn’t energized by what I needed to do to have this level of “success” and wondered why other entrepreneurs seemed to love the thrill of the hustle. This is when I was led to Dr. Elaine Aron and learned what it meant to be an HSP. I had never even heard the term before. Understanding my high sensitivity changed everything regarding how I went about my business and my entire life.
- Starting a business can be daunting for anyone, but doing so in the midst of personal bankruptcy is especially challenging. How did you navigate this difficult period, and what lessons did you learn from it?
This challenging time raised the stakes for me. I had to declare personal bankruptcy as a result of living in New York City during the global trauma of 9-11. I had taken a public-school teaching salary pay cut to work closer to where I lived as an attempt to reduce my lifestyle stress (I didn’t know I was highly sensitive then) and had lined up after-school work to supplement the income loss. As a result of 9-11 all of that work disappeared overnight. I was suddenly in a position of being unable to pay my bills, but what 9-11 also brought with it was a sense of urgency in regard to life’s purpose. I realized I needed to make a significant change in my career. So I pinched every penny and built up savings that would last me just 6 months of living extremely frugally if I didn’t sign on any clients. I took a 3rd of that and invested it in a business coach. The fire was lit and I never looked back.
- You’ve built Business Miracles into a platform that empowers HSP entrepreneurs. What inspired you to create this unique niche in the coaching industry?
My own experience. When I learned I was an HSP it was a massive light-build moment. I realized everything I was learning about how to build and grow a business was training that was designed for “the other 80%” – those who are not highly sensitive. I started to see everything about marketing, selling, and business operations through a different lens and set of values and quickly learned I was not the only one who needed the tools I was creating. As HSPs we possess a unique set of skills that equip us to be extremely talented coaches, teachers, healers, creatives, and service-based business owners. It’s all of the operations that throw us into literal nervous system overwhelm. I thought, what a shame that the world would miss out on what this special group of people has to offer just because the way marketing, selling, and business building is being taught doesn’t translate for them.
- In your experience, what are the key advantages that highly sensitive people bring to the business world? How can they leverage these strengths for success?
HSPs possess unique strengths. Through my practicum research, I have identified a set of top 12 strengths that are easily accessible to the HSP because of the way the nervous system is wired. These strengths fall into the realm of relational psychology such as the ability to possess deep empathy for another or a strong sense of intuition or the natural skill of being a deep listener. When an HSP is untrained these strengths tend to get lost to shadow tendencies such as overwhelm, over-protection, and over-responsibility. But when trained, the HSP can intentionally access these strengths and use them for innovative problem-solving, creative marketing approaches, and, of course, the ability to support clients with a natural ability to put the needs of others first.
- Your Highly Sensitive Leadership Training Programs are renowned for helping entrepreneurs work less, make a greater impact, and increase their income. Could you walk us through the philosophy behind these programs and why they are effective?
When an HSP is untrained there is the tendency to over-complicate even the simplest of tasks. Yet, when an HSP learns how to use their nervous system and manage it proactively they are able to self and business management systems designed to have their business provide them a lifestyle that caters to their HSP needs (less effort) while also making a difference for others through the service they provide (more impact) while generating a self-set income to support all of the above (more income). Yet all of this requires the HSP to be willing to do things differently than others in their industry as well as their families and even local communities. This requires a level of willingness to go through a re-training process about how the HSP sees themselves, what it means to be in business, and what the “right way” is to operate a business. This is everything that the Highly Sensitive Leadership Training Programs provide.
- Looking ahead, what are your future goals for Business Miracles? How do you envision the impact of your work expanding in the coming years?
It is my deep belief that HSPs have a significant role to play in the healing of our world. Because of our deep empathy ability and natural tendency to be of service to others, we hold the potential for a new way of business and leadership that is more about bringing people together rather than driving them apart. The Business Miracles Community is currently a global, inclusive community and I would like to see this double, triple, and quadruple over the next decade positively influencing the way people do business all around the world.
