In her first interview since the jury’s verdict in her high-profile trial, Amber Heard stated that she doesn’t blame the jury for agreeing with her ex-husband Johnny Depp, calling out the social media surrounding the case. Speaking on the jury’s verdict, Heard said, “I don’t blame them.”
“I actually understand. He’s a beloved character and people feel they know him. He’s a fantastic actor,” she said of Depp.
She described the social media fervor around her case as unfair in light of posts on Twitter and TikTok that were disproportionately in favor of Depp during the six-week trial.
Tweets bearing the TikTok hashtag Justice for Amber Heard totaled 27 million views, while those under the hashtag Justice for Johnny Depp numbered over 20 billion.
“I don’t care what one thinks about me or what judgments you want to make about what happened in the privacy of my own home, in my marriage, behind closed doors. I don’t presume the average person should know those things. And so I don’t take it personally,” she said.
“But even somebody who is sure I’m deserving of all this hate and vitriol, even if you think that I’m lying, you still couldn’t look me in the eye and tell me that you think on social media there’s been a fair representation,” she continued. “You cannot tell me that you think that this has been fair.”
Disney, who was not in court for the verdict because he had a work commitment at the time, sued for $50 million over an essay in the Washington Post by Heard that claims he abused her.
Even though the essay doesn’t explicitly mention Depp by name, his attorneys allege that it was really about her allegations against him during their 2016 divorce.
Heard filed a countersuit against Depp for $100 million in the midst of Depp’s defamation claim, which is centered around three statements made by Depp’s former attorney Adam Waldman in 2020 to the Daily Mail, in which he called Heard’s abuse allegations a hoax.
For six weeks, the public watched as Heard and Depp’s private lives became public knowledge and we watched as their acrimonious marriage disintegrated.
On June 1, Heard’s claims that Depp physically and emotionally abused her were deemed to be true by the jury and they ordered Heard to pay Depp $15 million in damages. The judge reduced the sum of $5 million in punitive damages to $350,000 and his total came to $10.4 million.
A previous interview of Heard’s attorney, Elaine Bredehoft, revealed that Heard plans to appeal and is not able to pay the $10.4 million award in the case.
