Professional artist, Star Bolton, has been at the helm of a transformative dance retreat on Hawaii’s Orchid Isle, where she helps individuals not only reignite their creative spark but also embrace the discovery and discipline that leads to true artistic freedom.
She shares her passion for creativity and movement by teaching dance classes at various locations across the island. In addition to her work as a visual artist, she leads art and dance classes, blending mindfulness and artistic expression to inspire her students. Utilizing the power of painting, text, image, and movement, she guides people to live what she playfully calls an “artFull life”. She looks forward to connecting with others and collaborating to create meaningful experiences, and forming what she fondly calls “ARTnerships”.
Her formal education in Fine Arts began at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where she attended on scholarships and graduated with a BA in Fine Art in 2001, all while raising her children. A pivotal moment in Bolton’s artistic evolution came during a study abroad program in Orvieto, Italy, where she immersed herself in printmaking, sculpture carving, Renaissance Art history, and figure drawing. The experience deepened her appreciation for the tradition of adorning life with artistic detail, a philosophy she has carried into her work at Orchid Isle Manor, where you will not only be surrounded by her artwork but will be able to eat off of art, dry off with art, and wear art also.
Star’s journey as an artist began early, at just three years old, when she discovered her talent for drawing and her knack for connecting art to community. Growing up as a third-generation artist in her mother’s art supply store and frame shop, Star was immersed in creativity from the start. Her father, celebrated architect and sculptor Skip Goodell added another dimension to her artistic upbringing, designing not only striking buildings but also the magnificent Orchid Isle Manor, built by her devoted husband Matthew Bolton, where Star has lived and worked for over 20 years.
Her method of teaching art and dance often focuses on the healing and transformative power of self-expression. Following simple steps, naturally puts us in a meditative state, helping our minds let go of anxious thoughts. It’s one of the easiest ways to be fully present, pulling us away from the constant cycle of worrying about the past or stressing over the future. Moving our bodies to music doesn’t just boost our mood; it also gives us a fresh perspective on life’s challenges and strengthens our emotional resilience.
Science backs this up. Research shows that dancing is incredibly beneficial for brain health, even more so than regular exercise. Studies have found that activities like social dancing can not only help prevent dementia in older adults but may even reverse early signs of cognitive decline. While social dancing, the body produces the four “feel good” hormones of dopamine, oxytocin, endorphins, and serotonin, which combat free radicals and reduce the signs of aging while also repairing the body on a cellular level.
Beyond the physical and mental benefits, dance is also a powerful tool for reconnecting with our bodies in a way that aids in emotional stability. It allows us to tap into playfulness, confidence, and even a sense of power we don’t always access in everyday life. And in the most effortless way, it reignites our creativity and connects us to something deeper—our own soul.
As the resident artist and mistress of Orchid Isle Manor on the Big Island of Hawai’i, she has woven creativity into every aspect of the schedule. Connection Camps, hosted at Orchid Isle Manor, are designed for those who seek a deep, immersive experience rather than a conventional vacation. These retreats are not about luxury; they are about adventure, authenticity, and connection to the sacred traditions of the island; finding & living your personal ritual.
This intensive practice is not just about learning dance steps, but about stepping into a fuller version of oneself. The experience is tailored for those who appreciate cultural depth, those who wish to honor the rich traditions of Hawai’i, and those who understand that the islands are more than just a tourist destination. From snowball fights on the beach to midnight moonlit walks to the blazing erupting volcano, participants will get to see a side of Hawai’i they could only access with a local’s inside guidance. They will learn to give and receive lomilomi massage, weave sunhats from palm fronds, and feel the relaxing effects of an ‘award ceremony.
Star has invited the top Brazilian Zouk dance instructors to her home to mentor participants with ¾ hours of daily dance training & nightly social dance parties.

For Star, these retreats go beyond teaching and healing, they are about guiding individuals toward a more profound connection with themselves. Be it through movement, painting, or mindful experiences, her goal is to help people bridge the gap between their dreams and their realities. The transformation that occurs is not limited to the time spent on the island. It ripples outward, shaping the way participants engage with their creativity, their self-expression, and their lives long after they leave.
