John M. Phillips

50 Under 50' 2023

by Alex McCurry
in 50 Under 50

Age – 48

Company Name – Phillips, Hunt, Walker & Hanna

Position In The Company – Founder / Attorney

Bio: John Phillips is a rising star when it comes to celebrity representation. When former Trump apprentice and White House employee Omarosa Manigault-Newman was sued for saying she wouldn’t vote for Donald Trump and describing his campaign as a “circus,” she turned to Phillips. After a three year battle in a New York based arbitration, not only was Omarosa victorious, but all of the campaign’s Non-Disclosure Agreements were invalidated and Phillips recovered the largest attorney fee award against a President or Presidential Campaign in history.

Phillips watched Netflix’s Tiger King like the rest of us, but was later hired by Joe Exotic. Phillips was part of Season two of Tiger King. He has a Motion for New Trial pending with evidence that Joe Exotic (Joseph Maldonado) was set up by his enemies. One witness even admitted to Phillips there was a plan to kill Joe which did not work out. Phillips travelled to the scene to find the evidence of Joe’s planned demise right where it was left.

Athletes, celebrities, and the wealthy turn to Phillips and his firm, but so do people who experience traumatic injury or constitutional rights violations. For instance, he represents one of the victims in the murder case against YNW Melly (Jamell Demons) and man who suffered a brain injury during a stunt-gone-wrong during a Steve-) (Stephen Glover) film shoot. For over twenty years, Phillips has represented people primarily in Florida and New York, including New York’s very own Naked Cowboy (Robert Burck). He also regularly appears on Court TV, CNN, HLN and national and local news providing expertise.

Phillips is licensed to practice law in eight states- New York, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Illinois and Washington, DC. He frequently sets records in civil jury verdicts, including one Florida wrongful death case where a jury awarded his client $495 million dollars. In that case, Phillips instructed a detective to put copies of the detective’s photos of his deceased client in an envelope and seal it, which he introduced in evidence. He challenged the jury to open it and view the gory details of how the murderer left her body if they thought he was asking for too much money. The envelope was never opened and the jury awarded more than he requested. “Jury trials are the heart of our justice system,” Phillips said, “When a jury puts the pieces together and provides justice, it’s special.” Phillips has many awards and accolades, but brags about his wife, Angela, and three boys, Bennett, Weston and Johnathan.
