New York, NY (November 7, 2022) – As the weather gets cooler and the holidays grow closer, TBaar is pleased to announce the winners of its Christmas at TBaar Cup Sleeve Art Contest. TBaar’s founder, Gary Lin, alongside four panelists and individual artists themselves, have chosen Zhiyu You, from the School of Visual Arts (SVA), and Nia Lam of Stuyvesant High School as the winners of the Christmas at TBaar Cup Sleeve Art Contest. In addition to having their limited edition design featured on cup sleeves at various TBaar locations this holiday season, each winner will also receive a $5,000 cash prize.
Featured guest panelists: Justin Wu, Dingding Hu, Ari Elefterin and Lorraine Nam are pleased with their winner selections. Dingding excitingly shares “You will be very impressed by what these artists have done. It wasn’t easy picking a winner but I must say I am thoroughly impressed by what they captured. It made me fall in love with NYC all over again.”
Gary adds, “This is the first of many contests we plan to host as a bubble tea brand. We are pleased to have chosen these two artists, who depicted their own version of Christmas in NYC, fitting to TBaar’s new branding. There is so much potential and opportunity for these young artists and we want to use our platform to showcase and celebrate them. TBaar is more than just a bubble tea brand, we are the first of our kind to offer something of this magnitude to our community.”
Gary opened the Christmas at TBaar Cup Sleeve Art Contest with the goal of inspiring young creative artists to depict their vision of Christmas in NYC ahead of its holiday campaign and pouring back into its community. In its first few weeks after submissions opened, TBaar received an overwhelming amount of drawings and illustrations from students across the five boroughs. The art contest drew students across the five boroughs and had 50 different schools and academies participate.
Nia, winner of the 14-17 age group describes her starry night design as: “The water along the horizon of the New York City skyline has frozen over. Snow makes its way down, falling gently, clinging to any surface. In front of the silhouette of the city and its ever-glowing lights, are people gathering to enjoy the magical occasion. It is a Christmas in New York.”
Zhiyu, the winner of the 18-25 age group, takes a more vibrant and gritty approach to her design. She describes it as: “There are many orders in the store on Christmas day but the staff of TBaar are well organized and prepare exclusive tea for every customer who orders. Mr. Bubble Milk Tea gets his order on Christmas Day and quickly starts his delivery with his friend. A little snowman. Miss Strawberry Green Tea, on the way to a guest’s house on a flying metrocard with Christmas gifts.”
“I am extremely excited, though not surprised, of Zhiyu’s win.” says Yuko Shimizu, professor at SVA. “She was my student at the School of Visual Arts in the BFA Illustration program where she just graduated in May. Talent is one thing, what matters more is the attitude and focus to learn and get better, that’s where Zhiyu excelled. I always knew Zhiyu was going somewhere, and look, she is going somewhere already!”
TBaar plans to continue its community outreach efforts and has plans to host similar events to highlight more young creatives. This holiday season regulars can grab a custom cup sleeve at TBaar’s Park Slope and Bayside locations.
