The world of fashion is a vibrant and ever-changing space where creativity, innovation, and self-expression come together to redefine our style. Megumi Roberts is at the forefront of this exciting landscape, a trailblazer whose unique journey and unyielding passion have led her to create the iconic brands LOUIS KHAN and STUDIO NIN. While Megumi is not a designer, STUDIO NIN is involved in many more projects beyond fashion, including athlete management, movie production, promoting Japanese content overseas, and producing luxury brand events.
From her humble beginnings, leaving her hometown and high school at the tender age of 16, Megumi has embarked on a path that defies societal norms. Her story is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her dreams. Through her brands, Megumi has redefined the boundaries of fashion, blending timeless elegance with contemporary flair, and fostering a more inclusive and sustainable industry.
1. Your journey has been marked by a willingness to take risks and forge your own path. What inspired you to pursue your dreams in an unconventional way, and how has this mindset influenced the creative vision behind LOUIS KHAN and STUDIO NIN?
I have been black sheep since I was born and I am not a conservative person. I need to respect my freeway mindset and I cannot put myself into a box. LOUIS KHAN means Louis from France because I was working for Cartier. Cartier was built by LOUIS Francois Cartier.KHAN from India. KHAN means King in Hindi and I am a big fan of one of the most famous Indian actors SRK. My desire is traveling and I have had many chances to connect with beautiful people in the world.
2. How do you balance staying true to your artistic expression while also ensuring commercial viability and appealing to a broader audience?
As a professional with a strong marketing background, I maintain a strategic perspective on my work. My ability to understand and anticipate audience needs allows me to seamlessly blend my artistic vision with commercial appeal. This balance ensures that my designs resonate with a broad audience while staying true to my creative principles.
3. Inclusivity and representation have become increasingly important conversations in the fashion industry. How do LOUIS KHAN and STUDIO NIN approach these issues, and what role do you envision your brands playing in fostering a more diverse and inclusive fashion landscape?
I have a deep appreciation for unique, one-of-a-kind items and collaborate with talented artists who share this vision. At LOUIS KHAN and STUDIO NIN, we prioritize inclusivity and representation by celebrating individuality and diversity in our designs. Our approach is to create pieces that reflect a wide range of cultural and personal identities, fostering a more inclusive and representative fashion industry.
4. Sustainability and ethical practices are becoming increasingly important in the fashion industry. What innovative approaches have you implemented to ensure that LOUIS KHAN and STUDIO NIN embrace these values while maintaining their commitment to quality and design excellence?
For us, quality takes precedence over quantity. We are committed to sustainable and ethical practices by focusing on limited production runs and avoiding mass production. This approach aligns with the haute couture philosophy of Louis Khan, ensuring that each piece is crafted with the utmost care and attention to detail. Our collaborators are dedicated to maintaining these high standards, ensuring that our commitment to sustainability does not compromise our design excellence.
5. Your journey has been fueled by passion, commitment, and constancy. Can you share any personal mantras or philosophies that have guided you through the challenges and successes you’ve encountered along the way?
I believe the sky is always watching us. I am fully committed to my projects all the time. Business is not only making money. Most important is making a great connection and investing your time in people and yourself. So-so work brings you so-so results. Give yourself more than 100% each time and you can go much farther from here.
6. Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for LOUIS KHAN and STUDIO NIN, and how do you envision your brands continuing to push boundaries and redefine the fashion industry?
Studio NIn is a NO boundary company. I am not a big fan of going to the office and I prefer to work from the beach. Our collaborators can work from all over the world and they can have multiple job roles. Just need to respond to my team quickly. Studio Nin’s intention is to work with good-spirited people. We would like to bring light to people who have a deep talent but don’t know how to shine themselves into the world yet.
