- You’ve been described as being “Raised with Real Estate™.” How has growing up in this environment shaped your approach to your career and your understanding of the industry?
Growing up in the industry, I have learned firsthand the real life of real estate—the long hours, the grumpy clients, the art of negotiating, the essential skills needed to survive in the business, and how uncomfortable it can feel. Most importantly, I have had a front-row seat for many years, soaking it all in, learning from the best, hearing from the best, and listening to countless stories. It was like making mental notes this entire time to learn from the best. I even wrote a book that is #1 on Amazon with co-authors, bringing together others’ stories of triumph, challenges, and success about real estate called, Real Estate Success Secrets.
What took it to another level was that I actually implemented what I learned and remained coachable. I not only listened but applied. If I heard a story at the dinner table about managing a difficult conversation, I thought to myself, “Great, I am going to say that when I experience that.” Overall, I took what I learned and applied it. I took others’ failures and mistakes and learned from them—that’s why top producers and experts share what they learn, so we can learn from their mistakes. Of course, we will make our own mistakes and learn from them too. How I see it is I’m learning at a quicker pace and able to apply it effectively.
- Your professional background is incredibly diverse, from flipping properties to owning multiple businesses. How do these varied experiences contribute to your success as a REALTOR®?
Owning four diverse businesses—from organic food to farming to fitness—has given me a broad perspective and a rich network. This experience helps me connect with clients on multiple levels and leverage past business relationships for real estate opportunities. My experience in the fitness industry has taught me a thousand ways how not to run a business, which has accelerated my grasp of real estate much faster than the average REALTOR®. Additionally, coming from a family of top-producing REALTORS® for Keller Williams in all of Canada has provided me with invaluable insights and mentorship. This combination of diverse business experience and family mentorship has equipped me with a unique edge to navigate complex transactions and deliver exceptional results for my clients.
- You were recently named one of Canada’s Top Fitness Instructors for 2023 by Impact Magazine. How do you balance your passion for fitness with your real estate career, and do you see any unexpected parallels between the two fields?
First, I feel there is no balance and we need to understand that. I like to look at it as work-life integration. For me, my fitness will always come first as that’s how I work on myself and keep my cup filled up. Doing this first enables me to put in the long hours with real estate. In terms of parallels, I believe it’s all about perception. In fitness, we teach clients about discipline, perseverance, and achieving long-term goals—all of which are equally relevant in real estate. Both fields require a dedication to continuous improvement, whether it’s through physical training or market analysis. The focus on personal development and client relationships is a common thread that ties both passions together.
- As an author who has written about mental health and real estate, what insights can you share about the intersection of these two topics, especially in today’s fast-paced market?
A lot. I feel REALTORS® are overworked, burnt out, and at times accommodate too much. I feel with a bit of organizing and using leverage as their best friend, it doesn’t need to be this way. If I were a REALTOR® in today’s market, I would find a team or hire a Virtual Assistant so I could focus on selling. Learn to leverage and learn it fast. Also, always keep learning and working on your mindset. Unlearn things and relearn others, question your belief systems because you never know what thought may be holding you back from your next win.
- You’ve appeared on the show “30 Minutes to Wealth.” What’s the most valuable piece of advice you’ve shared or learned about building wealth through real estate?
Hands down, the power of how to build wealth with what you have. For example, when I was younger, my husband and I kept trying to figure out how to buy our next property and little did we know the answer was not that difficult—pull equity from what you already have. We talked about this on the show—how people have wealth already and don’t realize how to utilize it or feel it’s too much of a risk when building wealth takes bravery.
- Community involvement seems to be a significant part of your life. How has your work with local organizations like Safe and Sound and the Owen Sound Hospital influenced your perspective on real estate and community development?
Working with local organizations has profoundly shaped my perspective on the importance of community in real estate. My involvement with Safe and Sound and the Owen Sound Hospital has shown me the direct impact we can have on people’s lives. It’s not just about selling properties; it’s about building communities and making a positive difference. This has driven me to integrate community support and development into my real estate practice, ensuring that we contribute to the well-being and growth of the areas we serve.
