Sam Conniff

50 Under 50' 2024

by Alex McCurry
in 50 Under 50

Age – 47

Company Name – Uncertainty Experts / Be More Pirate

Position In The Company – Chief Uncertainty Expert / Captain

Bio: Pirate, Scientist, Author, and Multi-Award-Winning Entrepreneur Sam Coniff is a man of many talents. His varied career began when he split his time between training as a chef and hosting illegal raves in south London before founding the long-running creative agency Don’t Panic, where his early collaborations included Banksy and Shepard Fairey. Then, in his early twenties, Conniff co-founded the first of its kind, youth-led marketing agency: Livity, a pioneering project that became one of the leading lights of the UK Social Enterprise Sector, helping brands like YouTube and Nike lay the foundations of their purpose-driven marketing campaigns, whilst also launching the careers of thousands of less advantaged inner-city young people.

The warehouse he occupied in Brixton, London, became an incubator of young talent, with many of London’s most creative young entrepreneurs starting their journeys there. It was also a hot house of ideas, where Conniff launched Dubplate Drama, the world’s first interactive drama series, Live magazine, a national publication created by young people for young people, and somewhereto, a UK-wide program enabling young people to access unused space for creative enterprises.

His entrepreneurial take on social impact saw Coniff receive numerous accolades from Social Entrepreneur Of The Year to Business of The Year, Agency of the Year, and even a special award from the Queen. Coniff did publicly refuse the MBE he was awarded by then Prime Minister Boris Johnson, turning it down in a public letter that cited the paradox of receiving an award for supporting predominantly young black people, given the award’s ties to Britain’s colonial past.

After the previous Prime Minister dedicated a chapter to Coniff in his book Everyday Heroes, he was appointed a Social Enterprise Ambassador to the UK government, championing the ideals and opportunities of purpose-driven business and mentoring thousands of young entrepreneurs along the way.

As Livity approached its 20th birthday, Coniff stood down to pass the baton to a new generation and wrote a book he called a love letter to rebels, troublemakers, and change agents. The book was called Be More Pirate, or How To Take On The World And Win, released by Penguin Random House in the UK and Simon and Schuster in the US. Both publishers were taken aback when Coniff launched the book with a guerrilla campaign of his own, flyposting the publisher’s offices and projecting anti-establishment messaging on the houses of parliament. As a result, the book became a bestseller in several countries.

His most recent adventures see Coniff reinvented as a scientist. He runs Uncertainty Experts, the world’s first interactive documentary, scientifically proven to increase Uncertainty Tolerance. The remarkable three-part series that Coniff wrote, produced, and presents won backing from Netflix and University College London, leading it to also become the world’s most extensive study into the human impact of uncertainty. Viewers of all three episodes record a statistically significant long-term increase in their Uncertainty Tolerance.

Having proven an entertainment format can have therapy-level results, Coniff has founded a new production company, Future Truths, to begin work on a slate of titles and topics using this radical new formula.

Once referred to by Forbes as one of the sharpest brains on the planet, Sam Coniff finds himself on the Fifty Under Fifty list, sharper than ever.
