Sierra Hooshiari

40 Under 40' 2023

by Alex McCurry
in 40 Under 40

Age: 34

Company: New Age Drinks

Position: Founder

Bio: Meet Sierra Hooshiari- the founder of New Age Drinks– based in New York City. She launched BrianPOP Drink- a new kind of smart soda beverage- after winning a government grant during the pandemic . Her healthcare and physician coworkers were the early-adopter taste testers. They are now her biggest fans. In just one year since its launch, BrianPOP is on track to be the #1 Physician & Healthcare-Workers’ Beverage of Choice.

Sierra’s journey took an unexpected turn during her sophomore year at Cornell University when she suffered a  severe brain injury (an epidural hematoma) that put her in a coma while on a humanitarian mission abroad. Life changed forever, overnight, and she recalls not reading about this sort of brain injury in her undergrad neuroscience & neurology class the semester prior.

BrainPOP smart soda is a functional beverage that emerges from Sierra’s desire to inspire brain nutrition and mental health awareness, while also making ‘not drinking cool. Sober curiosity is on the up, and many people still feel anxious about ‘not drinking’ in social settings. BrianPOP has 60% Daily Value of magnesium and Vitamin D3, in addition to other nutrients. But the best part of these drinks are the delicious, savory flavors and effervescent scents from the fruit purées. They are gently delicious and don’t have the aftertaste found in traditional energy drinks.

The ‘Clean Caffeine’ comes from a proprietary blend of green tea extract, green coffee bean, and guarana seed. One can enjoy a boost without a crash or jitters. Sierra formulated BrainPOP Drink with love and care at Cornell Food Ventures and completed the production run at The Brooklyn Cannery.

The “jitter-free” formula, carefully curated to cater to caffeine-sensitive individuals, has also garnered the loyalty of notable figures, including renowned surgeons entrusted with delicate microsurgery. Her brainchild has even captured the hearts of biohackers and forward-thinking innovators. A mural dedicated to front-line workers was unveiled last March during National Doctors Day in San Francisco, CA. It is a part of Mission Art 415’s Lilac Mural Project right by the BART’s Mission 24th St stop. This BrianPOP mural features the lightbulb, visible on the side of each can, with a ‘Drink to Think’ tagline to inspire the inner light within.

Organic ingredients sourced from fair-trade farms worldwide reflect New Age Drinks’ unwavering dedication to responsible sourcing, and its partnership with a Midwest family-owned business exemplifies Sierra’s commitment to community empowerment.

The author’s narrative isn’t just a story of entrepreneurship; it’s a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to transform adversity into triumph. Through BrainPOP smart soda, we redefine soda as a force for cognitive well-being, with the tagline ‘Drink to Think.’

Sierra’s personal story reminds us that our experiences, no matter how challenging, can be the seeds of transformative change when nurtured with passion and purpose. BrainPOP Drink has painted seeds in different communities on the East and West Coasts, in just one year, to iterate how great things can happen with small steps. We can inspire brain nutrition and mental health awareness, bringing a community closer together, one sip at a time.
