Erin M. Akers created the first and longest-running support group for diabetes and eating disorders on Facebook in 2008. This became the backbone for what grew to become Diabulimia Helpline in 2009, the world’s first non-profit organization dedicated to support, awareness, and advocacy for those struggling with diabetes and eating disorders. In 2018 they rebranded as DBH when they expanded into diabetes and ALL mental health issues. Trained in NEDA’s ‘The Body Project,” Erin has spent 15 years working with the emotional and behavioral aspects of diabetes and how they connect to food and body issues.

Now Erin trains eating disorder centers to implement diabetes and eating disorder-specific programs across the country, as well as speaking at diabetes clinics all over the U.S. Erin has spoken at The AADE, ADCES, ADA, NEDA, and IAEDP conferences. Erin can be found in publications such as Diabetes Forecast, Diabetes Health,  Diabetes Care, and PLAID Academic Journal. She has also appeared on the Huffington Post, NBC News, and Discovery Health Channel. Erin partnered with WebMD to film a short documentary highlighting a life lived with diabulimia. Now a Certified Personal Counselor, Erin works as a behavioral health counselor at an adolescent residential eating disorder facility helping teens who struggled as she once did.
