Vanessa Kahlon Shares Strategies For Parents To Improve Communication Skills With Their Kids

As children become more independent, parents sometimes find themselves trying to re-establish communication with their kids. However, parenting communication in an increasingly digital age can be challenging, especially because many of us are communicating digitally more often than face to face! Here, Vanessa Kahlon shares some strategies and tips on how parents can improve their communication skills with their children in today’s digital age.

Vanessa Kahlon is serving as the leader in the industry for more than two decades. With her extensive experience and a master’s in psychology, she opened her own school named Kahlon Family Services which is bringing solace to families with high-spirited children.  Her passion lies in teaching the importance of human connection and bridging the gaps in communication. In this blog post, we will discuss the ways to engage with your child through improved communication skills from an expert who has done it all!

Learn How Your Child Communicates

Discovering your child’s communication style will help you pick the best way to connect with them. Some children like a lot of feedback and reassurance, while others need time and space. Some children prefer visual or auditory cues, while others are more tactile. What do they seem to enjoy doing? What kind of games do they want to play? In what situations does your child feel most comfortable? These factors can help you determine how best to engage in an activity together.

Set Realistic Expectations

Parents should keep in mind that the first few sessions are not going to be perfect, but it is still important to have a plan in place and stick with it. It might take some time for the child to adjust. Parents should also be aware of how much time they are spending on this process and make sure they’re not over-committing themselves. As Vanessa teaches her clients,  If you’re struggling with what to say or what your message should be, it’s okay. Often times people will spend too much time worrying about the words they use instead of just talking from their heart. Talking from the heart is more genuine and easier than trying to come up with a clever word or phrase.

Get Away From Distractions

One of the best ways you can spend time with your kids is just by spending time with them. Get away from distractions and give your full attention. Don’t worry about TV, don’t worry about social media, don’t worry about anything other than the person you’re talking to. The world can wait. You’ll be glad you did.

As Vanessa explains in her book, ‘How to do Parenting with Confidence’,  What children need most from their parents isn’t perfection – it’s presence.  We live in a culture where people are very busy – they have jobs, they have family commitments, and they have endless distractions pulling at them from every direction. But we know that when parents make the effort to show up and turn off everything else, something amazing happens: Parents get what they want for themselves (and so does everyone else). And that’s really what parenting should be all about: being there for our kids.

Consider Ways Technology Can Help You Connect With Your Child

Technology is a powerful tool that can be used to help you connect with your child. It may not replace face-to-face conversations, but it can supplement them. There are many apps and programs that have been created specifically for this purpose. If there’s something you want to talk about with your child, like how they feel about school or how much screen time they should be allowed each day, set up a time to Skype or FaceTime. If you don’t have access to the Internet in the area where you live, find other ways to make contact through email or by sending letters back and forth!

Relax And Take Some Deep Breaths

This one is pretty self-explanatory. When you’re feeling stressed and anxious, try taking a few deep breaths. Inhale deeply through your nose, and then exhale slowly through your mouth. You can also use this as an opportunity to take in a few minutes of silence and think about what’s going on or what you need to do next. It’ll help calm your body down so that you can make good decisions and set reasonable expectations for yourself.
